Another victory for UQ law students

A mooting team from the University of Queensland’s (UQ) TC Beirne School of Law has won the 9th annual International Maritime Law Arbitration Mooting competition, held recently in the Federal Court of Australia in Perth.

The team from UQ, sponsored by Brisbane Marine Pilots, competed against 16 other teams from around the world and was presented with their prize at the awards dinner.

UQ has won this competition four times since 2002, reached the semi-finals on two other occasions and the quarter-finals on one occasion.

The competition focuses not only on the law governing the international carriage of goods by sea but also on the increasingly important law of international commercial arbitration.

Professor Sarah Derrington, Director of the Marine and Shipping Law Unit at UQ said “the results are a testimony to the strong research and advocacy skills of the students involved.”

“The students worked very hard in preparing for the competition and their successes are well deserved.”

The TC Beirne School of Law has a strong reputation in mooting, having successfully participated in and won a number of prestigious competitions including the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, and the Red Cross International Humanitarian Law Moot Competition.

The University of Queensland will host next year’s International Maritime Law Arbitration Mooting competition.
