Town & Gown Debate
'It Takes 75 years to Make Sense of the Law'
August 2011
Our 75th Anniversary marks a significant milestone for a cherished institution which began as a 'shadow' faculty on establishment of the University of Queensland in 1910, and became a fully-functioning School in 1936, thanks to a generous donation of $3million (in today's money) from local businessman Thomas Charles Beirne.
Over the years the School has witnessed the progress of thousands of students as they've embarked on a lifetime journey to learn and make sense of the law. Its graduates have made a substantial contribution to communities in Australia and overseas, stimulated new ideas and innovations, and demonstrated dedication and leadership in many different fields of expertise.
Today, the School ranks 35th in the QS World University Rankings and is globally respected for its high quality undergraduate and postgraduate education and leading-edge research. These factors, among many, enable us to continue to attract the best and brightest students from Australia and overseas.
To celebrate 75 years of teaching the law the School hosted a gala 'Town & Gown' debate to test the mettle of some of Queensland's sharpest legal minds, pitting academics and practitioners against each other in a war of words and wit on the theme, 'It takes 75 years to make sense of the law.'
The debate was chaired by the Honourable Justice Margaret A McMurdo AC and attended by over 190 guests from the legal profession, the University of Queensland, descendants of TC Beirne, and our community partners.
