A UQ expert on maritime law has been elected Vice-Chair of the Australian Maritime and Transport Arbitration Commission (AMTAC).
Associate Professor Sarah Derrington from the TC Beirne School of Law was elected to the position at the inaugural AMTAC meeting last month.
A lecturer in maritime law at The University of Queensland, Associate Professor Derrington is also the Director of the Marine and Shipping Law Unit (MASLU) within the TC Beirne School of Law. She is the Vice-President of the Maritime Law Association of Australia and New Zealand (MLAANZ) and has been a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators since 2002.
Associate Professor Derrington shares the position of Vice-Chair with Mr Stephen Bouwhuis, Assistant Secretary to the Attorney-General’s Department and Mr Lachlan Payne, CEO of the Australian Logistics Council and Australian Shipowners’ Association. The Commission is chaired by Mr Peter McQueen, Partner at Blake Dawson Waldron Lawyers in Sydney.
AMTAC was established earlier this year by the Attorney-General’s Department to mediate and resolve maritime and transport law disputes. The Commission was established to meet the demands of the industry, with approximately 12 percent of world trade by volume either coming into or going out of Australia by sea.
