Intake into postgraduate law programs reaches four year high

Demand for places in UQ’s TC Beirne School of Law postgraduate programs has increased substantially and enrolments for 2009 are the highest recorded in the past four years.

Dean of Law Professor Ross Grantham said this trend was particularly evident in the School’s Master of Laws (LLM) program.

“We’ve seen a marked increase in enrolments in the LLM program this year, particularly from those practising in the profession returning to undertake further study. The number of Bachelor of Laws (LLB) students continuing to the Master’s program before entering the work force has also increased.”

Professor Grantham said the School was in constant consultation with the legal profession to ensure its programs remained relevant to today’s professional demands.

“As one of the leading law schools in Australia, we are committed to maintaining our long tradition of providing first-class programs. We are in an on-going process of consultation with the legal profession and this allows us to reassess and evaluate the content and delivery of our programs to meet current needs.

“Recent discussions about the structure and content of the LLM have revealed a preference for more concentrated areas of specialisation and also more concentrated modes of delivery. The School is now working towards meeting these professional requirements in the near future.”

Professor Grantham said enrolments for the School’s suite of postgraduate applied law programs remained steady, reflecting an on-going demand.

“Law isn’t just for lawyers and our applied law programs are designed to equip non-law graduates with legal knowledge and skills relevant to their profession or occupation. Business people frequently find they are dealing every day with legal issues such as contracts, personal liability, finance and insurance law, company law and tax law and many are returning to advanced study in law to give them the professional edge.”
