The TC Beirne School of Law at The University of Queensland celebrated its 70th anniversary last week with the launch of a book which provides a history of the School from its formation in 1936.
Entitled, TC Beirne School of Law – 70th Anniversary, the book was launched at an evening reception in the Walter Harrison Law Library at UQ on Wednesday 12 July.
In attendance were descendants of Mr TC Beirne, the Brisbane businessman whose generous donation facilitated the creation of a separate faculty of law.
Distinguished guests included the Governor of Queensland, Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce AC, The University of Queensland Chancellor, Sir Llewellyn Edwards AC, Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Hay AC, Chief Justice of Queensland, the Hon Paul de Jersey AC and the Hon Justice Glen Williams AO.
The Head of the Law School, Professor Charles Rickett, acknowledged the obligation on current students and staff to maintain the tradition of academic excellence and to support the institution of law as past students and staff had continued to do.
‘The current high level of achievement within the Law School through outstanding Moot competition success, an unprecedented number of Rhodes scholarship recipients and quality research outputs augur well for the future of the School,” he said.
Copies of the commemorative book are available for purchase from the Law School Office. Click here to download an order form. The book costs $22 (including GST) with funds directed to defraying the cost of production.
Note - With any historical piece of research there are inevitable errors or omissions, although the authors have endeavoured to keep these to a minimum. If you do find any errors and omissions, it would be appreciated if you could direct amending information to the current Chair of the Heritage Committee, Dr Rachel Baird (r.baird@law.uq.edu.au). It is anticipated that a second edition of the book will be produced for the 75th anniversary in 2011.
