Introduction |
| |
1.1 |
The submission of progressive assessment material on the due date, and attendance at mid-semester examinations [1], is the responsibility solely of the student. Students should not leave assignment preparation until the last minute and must plan their workloads so as to be able to meet advertised or notified deadlines. |
| |
1.2 |
The School does recognise, however, that on occasion illness or other medical conditions may impair a student’s ability to complete items of progressive assessment by the due date or to attend mid-semester examinations as scheduled. |
| |
1.3 |
This mandatory guideline sets out the consequences for students of non-completion of items of progressive assessment and the circumstances under which extensions may be sought. |
| |
1.4 |
Subject to 4.0, extensions will only be considered in respect of illness or other certified medical condition. It is the policy of the School of Law, that neither pressures of work (whether university studies or external work) nor other events or commitments are a sufficient reason for an extension. |
| |
1.5 |
This policy applies only to items of progressive assessment and not to final, centrally controlled examinations. The rules regarding non-attendance at a centrally controlled examination may be found in the University’s General Award Rules. |
| 2.0 |
Overdue Non-examination Assessment |
| |
2.1 |
Where a non-examination item of assessment (including essays, assignments, take-home tests, etc) is not submitted by the due date and time, a penalty will be levied at the rate of 10% of the marks available for the assessment item per day (or part thereof) that the assessment is overdue. Assessment submitted more than 5 days after the due date will receive zero marks. [2] |
| |
2.2 |
Where the failure to submit the item of assessment on the due date is because of an illness or other medical condition impairing the student’s ability to complete the assessment, the student may, on the presentation of an appropriate medical certificate, be granted an extension of the due date for submission without penalty.
| 2.2.1 |
Applications for extension must be made prior to the due date for the assessment unless the illness or other medical condition is such that the student cannot reasonably be expected to have applied prior to the due date. |
| 2.2.2 |
Any extension will be limited to the number of days (calculated to the nearest business day) the student is suffering from the medical condition as indicated on the medical certificate, provided that no extension may exceed 14 days. [3] |
| 2.2.3 |
Applications for extension shall be made by lodging the Application for Extension of Assessment form (and supporting documentation) with Law School Office, Level 3, Forgan Smith Building. Students will be advised of the outcome of their application via their student email address. A copy of that advice will be sent to the course co-ordinator. |
|
| |
2.3 |
Late assignments must be submitted at the Law School Office, Level 3, Forgan Smith Building, between 8.30am and 5pm, Monday to Friday. |
| |
2.4 |
Students failing to submit the assessment on the extended due date will be penalised in accordance with 2.1. |
| 3.0 |
Absences from Mid-semester Examinations |
| |
3.1 |
Where a student does not attend a mid-semester examination, the student will in the normal course of events receive zero marks for the examination. |
| |
3.2 |
Where due to illness or other medical condition occurring on the day of the examination a student is unable to attend a mid-semester examination or the performance of a student in the examination has been significantly impaired, the student may, on the presentation of an appropriate medicial certificate covering the date of the examination be permitted to sit a special examination in lieu. (Note: If the exam has been missed, the medical certificate must be dated within 2 business days of the original exam date. If the exam has been attempted, the medical certificate must be dated within 1 business day of the original exam date and the student must have notified the exam supervisor before leaving the exam.)
The special mid-semester examination will be held in the period nominated by the School for the holding of mid-semester special examinations. The special mid-semester examination may be implemented as an oral examination.
| 3.2.1 |
Applications for a special examination must be lodged no later than 5 calendar days following the date of the mid-semester examination. |
| 3.2.2 |
Applications for a special mid-semester examination shall be made by lodging the Application for Extension of Assessment form (and supporting documentation) with Law School Office, Level 3, Forgan Smith Building Students will be advised of the outcome of their application via their student email address. A copy of that advice will be sent to the course co-ordinator. |
|
| |
3.3 |
Where a student is unable to sit an on-line quiz (worth no more than 10% of the final grade) because of illness, the student will not be permitted to undertake the quiz at a later stage. Where the on-line quiz is worth more than 10%, a student may apply for a special examination as outlined above. |
| 4.0 |
Exceptional Circumstances |
| |
4.1 |
In exceptional circumstances, an extension in respect of an item of non-examination assessment or a special mid-semester examination may be granted for non-medical reasons. For this purpose, exceptional circumstances may include:
- a sporting or cultural commitment at state, national or international level (refer to HUPP 3.40.15 Programs and Assessment for Elite Athletes); or
- serious personal or emotional trauma; or
- in very exceptional circumstances, an important planned family or social commitment; or unavoidable work commitment.
Extensions or special mid-semester examinations will not be granted where the Director of Teaching is not satisfied that the student took reasonable measures (steps) to avoid the circumstances that contributed to the student being unable to submit the non-examination assessment or attend the mid-semester examination.
Matters such as:
- holiday arrangements (including overseas travel); or
- misreading an examination timetable; or
- social and leisure events, including family commitments and sporting or cultural commitments (other than at state, national or international representative level)
are not grounds for an extension or special mid-semester examination.
|
| |
4.2 |
Application for an extension or a special mid-semester examination on the grounds of exceptional circumstances shall be made to the Director of Teaching by lodging the Application for Extension of Assessment form (and a personal statement outlining the grounds for the application) with Law School Office, Level 3, Forgan Smith Building, no later than 7 calendar days following the due date for the assessment. Students will be advised of the outcome of their application via their student email address. A copy of that advice will be sent to the course co-ordinator. |

Students with Disabilities |
| |
5.1 |
Where a student has a disability in terms of HUPP 1.70.8 University Disability Policy, the provisions of that policy shall apply. |
