Sri Lankan judges to attend training seminars at UQ

Twelve judges of the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal of Sri Lanka will take part in a program of educational and training seminars at the University of Queensland during August 11–17.

Organised by the TC Beirne School of Law Centre for Public, International and Comparative Law (CPICL), the aim of the program is to enhance knowledge in emerging areas of law, such as information technology, intellectual property, and banking and finance.

CPICL Director Professor Suri Ratnapala said the visiting justices are among the most senior and distinguished judges in the Sri Lankan judiciary.

“The Supreme Court is the highest court of Sri Lanka and the Court of Appeal is the penultimate appellate court. In addition to providing education and training, the program will also serve as a medium for the exchange of views between Sri Lankan and Australian judges, lawyers and academics and strengthen existing historical and legal cultural links between the two jurisdictions.”

The program is funded by grants from the World Bank and the government of Sri Lanka and is a joint collaboration between CPICL and UniQuest Pty Ltd., the fully owned commercial arm of the University of Queensland.
