Criminal Law

Scholars within the School of Law have research interests and expertise in substantive criminal law, police powers, criminal procedure, criminal evidence, international and transnational criminal law, corporate crime, criminology, the history of criminal law and criminal justice theory. Recent and current work includes studies of:

  • the recognition within the criminal law of indigenous customary law
  • the interface between criminal justice and indigenous culture
  • preventative detention and indefinite sentencing regimes
  • the prevention of domestic violence
  • organised crime legislation in the Asia Pacific region
  • the trafficking and exploitation of foreign sex workers in Australia and Canada
  • the logic and law of propensity and relationship evidence in sexual assault cases
  • expected erroneous acquittals and the potential of double jeopardy reform, and
  • the impact of bills of rights on criminal law outcomes
  • comparative analysis of criminal law in Asian and Islamic nations
