Queensland’s current Governor, Her Excellency Quentin Bryce AC, and graduate of The University of Queensland’s TC Beirne School of Law, is to become Australia’s next Governor General.
Ms Bryce will replace the current Governor General, Major General Michael Jeffrey, when he retires in August.
After graduating from The University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws, Ms Bryce has worked and taught in various areas of law, including criminal and administrative law, and has demonstrated her commitment to advancing human rights and equality, and the rights of women and children.
Calling her appointment a "great day for Australian women", Ms Bryce said "what this day says to Australian women and to Australian girls is you can do anything, you can be anything".
Head of the TC Beirne School of Law, Professor Ross Grantham, said, “Ms Bryce has demonstrated her commitment to the law and assisted those whose voices may not be heard as loudly as they should be with her work in advocating human rights”.
“I offer my congratulations to her and hope our students currently studying at the TC Beirne School of Law realise they too, can strive to achieve anything they choose to put their minds to”.
