UQ Law Students, Rebecca James (BA/LLB) and Laura Grant (BA/ LLB) recently represented Australia in the International Negotiation Competition in Singapore.
The Australian Student Negotiation team, represented by two UQ Law students, competed against teams from the United States, England-Wales, Ireland, Canada and Singapore in hotly contested negotiations.
The Australian team took out second place out of the sixteen countries competing.
Rebecca and Laura said they used the competition to try new techniques and to network with law students from other countries.
“The competition was an excellent opportunity to try a variety of new negotiating techniques and forms (including a four-party negotiation). Furthermore, it gave us the chance to forge ties with interesting people from the 15 other countries represented at the competition”, they said.
Both students have returned from the event with a renewed interest in legal negotiation.
“We have come back with a renewed sense of excitement about negotiation and are looking forward to educating younger students about the new skills that we have acquired”, they said.
Contributions by the TC Beirne School of Law, UQ Law Society and Trillum Group allowed the students to attend and compete at the International Negotiation Competition for Law Students.
Rebecca and Laura said that they would not have been able to have this opportunity without the generosity of their supporters.
“The competition, which we were only able to attend by virtue of your generosity, was immensely personally rewarding for both of us”, they said.
The International Negotiation Competition commenced in 1998 and has been hosted by various Law Schools around the world.
The competition involves a team of two law students representing a party and negotiating an international transaction or resolution of an international dispute with an opposing team of two law students.
